And the best part? It’s only about two hours from Hanoi, making it one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips you can plan.
If you’ve been considering Ha Long Bay but aren’t sold on the crowds or overnight logistics, Ninh Binh is a very strong alternative, quieter, more accessible, and just as visually impressive.
Getting there (and why it’s worth planning ahead)
Count around two hours each way. The easiest option is to book a group or private tour, which keeps everything seamless and lets you focus on enjoying the day rather than organizing transport on the spot.
Start early: Hang Mua viewpoint
Your first stop should be Hang Mua Viewpoint.
Go early, this is key. It gets busy later in the day, and you’ll want to enjoy the climb and the view without too much waiting. The hike itself is manageable (around 30 minutes up), but wear proper shoes, it’s steps all the way.
At the top, you’ll find views over the moutains and river, plus the iconic dragon statue stretched along the ridge.
Once you’re back down, take a moment to walk around the nearby lotus fields, especially if you’re visiting between late May and July when they’re in full bloom.
Midday: The boat experience (don’t skip this)
Next, head to Tam Coc for the boat ride.
This is where Ninh Binh really stands out. You’ll be gently rowed along the river, passing through caves and between limestone formations, all at a very unhurried pace. It’s peaceful, scenic, and gives you a close-up look at local life.
A few things to know:
– Rowers use their feet to steer the boat
– Many are local residents working on a rotating schedule, sometimes only once a week
– Tipping matters here: around 100,000 VND is appropriate (and still very reasonable).
You may be offered souvenirs toward the end of the ride, if you’re not interested, a polite but clear “no” is best.

– Tam Coc feels more local and rustic
– Trang An is more structured and organized
